You'd need at least a 386SX to do Linux, plus a bunch of RAM.  I've
run Xastir in as little as 32MB before, but if he has very old DOS
machines he may not have enough RAM and/or it may be quite a fight
to get Linux installed on there.

FWIW I started into Linux on a 386SX-20 with 2MB of RAM.  That was
without X11, a custom kernel without all the fluff, and reducing the
number of daemons to a minimum.  Add X11 (required for Xastir) and
you increase your memory requirements quite a bit.
