It's a replacement for an existing TNC or D7/700.

IMO, if it had messaging capability it would be superior to the APRS  
application in the D7/700 when it is used in conjunction with a  
mapping GPS. As a digipeater it's already superior to any device you  
can name, except maybe a digi_ned installation.

All Scott's stuff, hardware and software, are open source (this is  
the reason to buy an OT and not a TT).  Someone sufficiently  
determined could take the work Scott has made available and create  
the system you describe.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, you can feed the APRS audio out from  
your D700 to the T2 and split the TX and RX lines to the GPS, routing  
them to the D700 and T2 respectively, and that would do it.  I may  
have just found a new project for the evening. (:
