I don't think it's all that bad an idea, as the industry has come up with a
selection of amplified GPS antennas to deal with this scenario.  A few years
ago I got an old Trimble 6 channel GPS for $15 from a surplus electronics
place, then paid about $5 or $10 for an amplified antenna on ebay.  It has
been in my truck ever since, and providing excellent service.

It is cheaper and simpler to mount a GPS18 or Deluo outside as Stephen says,
but an internal GPS isn't the end of the world.
