[aprssig] KNOPPIX and XASTIR

Hmmpf... Surprised to see so many posts with xastir problems. It came
right up for me on SuSE 10.0. I'm running version 1.8.4. What did I do
right?

Greg.

I have a Mandrake 9.something PC here. Like you, I find it very frustrating
to use. The only thing useful I've done with it, is use it for running an
EchoLink Proxy. And even that has to be loaded manually each time.
Something strange about Java app's, you can't "launch" them at start-up
automatically. OK, so the usual "Office" type stuff runs OK, as does web
browsing and email etc.

Updates? Forget it, none available unless you scrub it, and install a
"clean" copy of Mandriva or some other version of Linux. (I can't be
bothered personally with all that again)

Knoppix. Have that (Harve's hamshack hack) It's very fussy about screen
hardware I find. And takes an age to boot, even on a multi GHZ machine with
100's of MB of ram..

Xastir on Knoppix, I did get it to load once, but when I tried customising
it (My callsign etc) it kept crashing. Virtually no maps for anything
outside the US available in a usable form either. (No flame wars please,
try it, they don't work!)

About the best "Live" Linux CD I've found, is the "Puppy" versions. Fast,
stable, and updatable. Google for "Puppy Linux". But... Little Ham
software available for that version the last time I looked (3 months ago)
Again, all the usual stuff works fine, it even found a way past our company
proxy/firewall all by itself. Even Windows can't do that without help!...

Cheers..

Not to steal this thread, but does anyone have some
tips for installing XASTIR on Mandrake 8.1? Better
yet, is there some way to "live update" Mandrake to a
Mandriva kernel and then install from there? I have
attempted an "apt-get" with no luck. It actually
tells me that it doesn't recognize apt-get as a valid
command.

I am in NO WAY handy with Linux. I just recently
dusted off this copy of 8.1 and installed it on a
spare machine. I went ahead and installed every
package available on the CD, hoping that I might
actually be able to do somthing with it. It seems
like everytime I try to play with Linux, a couple of
days later I want to throw the computer through the
wall. So, I give up and go play with somthing else.
