What I've done for remote control shut offs before was this. Many
radios have DTMF guard on them where the squelch is closed until
someone enters in a user defined code on the DTMF pad. Once the
correct sequence is entered, the receiver is opened up for normal use.
I'd turn the DTMF guard on and the squelch all the way down with the
volume halfway up. That way, if I wanted to shut off the TNC sending
packets, CW beacons or whatever, all I'd have to do is get on quick,
send a couple touch tones and my callsign then the TNC would be
effectively deactivated, provided you don't have your TNC's carrier
detect set to Software. Of course, this only works when you are
within radio range and if you want to turn it back on, you'd have to
have physical access to the radio but it serves its purpose and it's a
cheap and easy way of accomplishing it.
