Every other packet going basically nowhere.  Let's assume your "local  
event" station is a field setup with a 20' antenna, or home station  
with a rooftop antenna.  Very few of the "direct" packets will ever  
be heard.

You could accomplish much the same thing by simply setting all  
mobiles to TX every 2 minutes instead of every minute.  Presto, 50%  
bandwidth utilization reduction.

What we need are smart digipeaters that can adjust paths dynamically  
based on network load, distance from transmitting station, recently  
heard traffic, etc.  There are far fewer digis than mobiles, after  
all, and they can "hear" what's happening on the network better than  
a mobile.
