Thanks, Andrew,
Which Doppler is this with? I don't know the characteristics of all he various ones out there, but this may help.

  Curt,
I'm very familiar with the Doppler system as well as other DF tools as I was professionally in it some time ago (and have kept up on many of the new developments). It is a good tool, but not the end-all, never need anything else DF tool.
I am interested, as it appears you are, in actual experience with them and the APRS "squawks". I'm finishing up one (finally) and am curious how the modulation affects them.
I also have two new ideas I want to try (after all these years of thinking and not doing much).
I hope to try these variations once it is finished in the next months and may use local APRS stations, as well as local repeaters and mobiles as guinea-pig stations to DF. One of these ideas addresses the sensitivity issue, the other *may* provide some info to improve understanding fo multi-path. A third (nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition) the broadband "whine/splatter" issue.

I found that one or two seconds of carrier , does not matter what mod
is on it is enuf to give u a direction.

What I find you have to do is keep clearing the display now and then to
start from scratch.

I was very impressed never have done this before

APRS usually has a position in it, so you must mean a misbehaving
APRS station?
