The asterisk is just the human-readable representation of the
has-been-digipeated bit, or the this-digi-has-been-used-up field.
Whatever it's called.

Each bit gets set in sequence as each digi gets used up, but in
command-mode some TNC's only show you the last asterisk, some show
you an asterisk for each used-up digipeater field.
