More often than you might imagine!...  If not total failure, high
resistance (only a fraction of an Ohm, but...) can encorage starting
currents to take the "scenic" route, sometimes with "interesting"
results...

Most automotive electrical problems, and "odd" bahaviour (especialy of
external lights etc) can be atributed to a bad ground somewhere.  The
clasic indicator/brake light interaction being a prime example.
