The VX2R maybe a bit too complex for a 10 year old...although learning
curves are pretty quick.  For not much more you can consider the FT60r which
is a fully featured, full key complement machine.  The VX2R requires that
you take a user guide with you or a cheat sheet to remember the embedded
command list.

The VX-1xx radios are cheap and good ease of use...but 2m only with extended
rx.

After owning just about every HT made, I keep coming back to Yaesu for
rugged constuction and reliability.  Drop a VX series, dust it off and keep
using it.  Drop a D7, F6, or IC (IC really means "I crack")...and you'll
probably end up sending it back to the factory.

Cool -- my son was licensed at 10.

You might check the VX-2 by Yaesu, IF you can live with one watt output.

It uses LI batteries, and replacements are available - severeral cell phone
batteries fit this handheld.

Good, rugged, inexpensive, basic radio for V and UHF.
