Not sure if this is what you were looking for but....

I use XVNC on FreeBSD to run Xastir.. Then I use VNC Client 
(TightVNC) on the Windows machine so I can manage my Xastir 
server.  That was the easiest solution for me.

I use a startup script in the OS to make XVNC and Xastir load on boot.

XVNC acts as a virtual display, so I can just connect at whim and 
respond to text messages, etc.  The server is actually below the 
floor and it's my secondary DNS for the intranet. :)
