Here's my favorite "pushing the envelope"
application. Its a Ham Radio service offered
to the public. It is no different than setting
up a booth and soliciting NTS traffic.
Its my solar powered "APRS" post on the
Appalachian trail. Its an old LAPTOP
disassembled into a WX prof flat display
to show the positions of hikers along the
trail (A public service provided by a local
HAM club in the area).
Hikers enter their XXX initials, which way they
are hiking (N or S), and miles per day using only
a menu and 3 weatherproof keys (up/dn/select).
Once every 30 minutes the "APRS post" sends
out a position object properly deadreckoned ahead
for each of the hikers that have checked-in.
The system is under the automatic control of the
club that set it up. It is put there in the best
interest of Ham radio and the public good. It
is monitored by the club for proper operation
and emergencies and it is provided as a public
service and promotes Ham radio (Pamphlets in
the flip-top-box).
Pamphlets tell them all about ham radio.
No different that what we do at any public
fair or show. Its just automated... and therefore
much more reliable and always present. See

Maybe someday when I retire, Ill have time to
do this... :-)
