You its so annoying to constantly hear the rants that Basic Stamps are
soooooo expensive, when you can buy the BS2SX-OEM (am Ubicom SX-28) chip
from Parallax for $12, a 24LC128 from Mouse for a dollar something and some
assorted glue chip for a couple of bucks and have a full 50 MHz BS2-SX up
and running inexpensively.

 Now its bulkier and a bunch of wiring to do using the OEM chips if you use
the DIP versions versus the Parallax complete product on their tiny 24 pin
carrier. Granted you could shrink that down using  the SOIC versions of the
OEM, but you then are dealing with less size but mice-size SM stuff.

Further you can use the raw SX-28 at 50 MHz for $3.50-$5.50 (depending on
whether Parallax is having a sale) and program it using the free SX/B
compiler, but you have an initial layout of $40-60 for the Blitz-Key
programmer or SX-key programmer/debugger.
