I agree with Stephen - just leave the GPS on and let it keep a lock.

I have an old Trimble SV6 (that's powered by a 7805) that stays 
connected in my F150 24x7.  The only time I disconnect it is about once 
a year when I leave for a week's vacation.  The GPS is always powered 
up ready to go.
