Yes. When you are surrounded by more than 180 stations
that can hit you direct, then the only way to fit them into the
1200 baud channel without significant reliability issues is
to operate only direct.
Its just like the cell phone industry, the cells just ikeep getting
smaller. But near infinite growth is possible. The cell phone
limit is reached when the range is reduced to the 6' length
of a phone cord. In APRS, once we get down to more than 180
all hearing each other direct, then we have no choice but
to go to split freqs for TX/RX (that will support 300 direct)
or higher rates...
We have a long way to go. LA is the only place that is
approaching the 100 limit... and yet we hve good one
hop design that is being consdiered there:
