Bill, the RJ-45 IS a connector spec. How it is wired also carries a
spec. Usually one of three types, USOC, AT&T 258A (568B) or AT&T 258B
(568A). The descriptions tell how "pairs" of wires are connected to the
jack/plug.

There are several others that all refer to the same connector. There's
actually a name for the connector, but it slips my mind at the moment.
