[aprssig] IGATE at Home

Fred,
I too recommend using UI-View. I have tried just about every flavor of APRS
software at one time or another. While I still prefer WinAPRS for serious
APRS Operations (due to the fact that I can have multiple maps open tracking
different units at the same time), UI-View is the easiest and most stable
version to use as an I-Gate. The biggest reason is that you can connect to a
filtered port on an APRS server and have it send the filter request
automatically. This really helps cut down on the data you have to receive
from the internet while still letting you send everything you hear
effectively. It also has a fairly simple process for filtering stations you
want to gate to the RF that it hears on the internet. I do this when one of
our local guys sets out on a long trip so that we all can see where he is
(and with WinAPRS you can set a map window to scroll on his station in a
separate window). I have left my MFJ in the standard mode and not used KISS.
This works for me, the only reason I would set up the KISS mode is if I
wanted to become a digi and use the smart digi functions in UI-View. Check
with your local folks to see if you would need to be used as a digi, just
doing it might not be the best thing for your local RF network depending on
the conditions and existing coverage. Feel free to keep asking questions.
Your assumption of how to do it is exactly what you thought it was, a very
good idea and the simple way to do it.

Thank You,
Brian N2KGC

The more I'm thinking this project out, the more I think I am going to
set up an APRS station at home. Since I have cablemodem there, there is no
reason that digi on our mountain site couldn't relay to my station and let
me IGATE it.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but I think I need my MFJ TNC connected
to my PC via a serial port and some piece of software to run as a process on
my PC (I have Windows 2000 Professional on that PC and have no intention of
downgrading it to XP, just my bias).

I think I remember that there were two pieces of software that might
accomplish that. What would you folks recommend for this? And if I have
missed something important here, please let me know.

     73,

                                        Fred, WB4AEJ
